3. DAVID3 GALLOWAY (MARY2 BARNET, JOHN1) was born Abt. 1818, and died 10 March 1907 in Pauatahanui, N Z. He married ANN MCEWEN 13 October 1839 in Abbotshall, Fifeshire, Scotland, daughter of ANDREW MCEWEN and AGNES HENDERSON.
Notes for DAVID GALLOWAY:
I am not 100% sure of his christening or parentage - I am assuming he is from Forgandenny. Forgandenny is a small village south of Perth in Scotland.
Forgandenny parish records (film no. 1040353) show that James Drummond was the pastor of the Forgandenny parish, from about 1828. Rev James Drummond was married to a Elizabeth HOGG in 1829 at Forgandenny.
There is a David GALLOWAY born 3 Dec 1818 and baptised at Forgandenny 3 Jan 1819. It reads as follows;
David natural son to David GALLOWAY, late tenant in south Ardargie and Mary BARNET - daughter of the deceased John BARNET, Ardargie. Baptised by John Willison, Mary BARNET, sponsor for her own child.
David and Ann were married at Abbotshall, Fifeshire 17 days before leaving from Glasgow for New Zealand.
Arrived in Wellington on the Bengal Merchant (160 Pass barque) 10 Mar 1840. It had left Glasgow 31 Oct 1839. On the shipping list he is a 20 year old tailor with his 18 year old wife and no children. He is recommended by Rev James Drommond of Forgandenny, Perth. He is accompanied on this journey by his brother in law David McEWEN and his wife Mary (flaxmiller with recommendations from Dundee) and his parents in law Andrew and Agnes McEWEN.
An account by WEBSTER in 'The Immigrants' is a diary of events on board the Bengal Merchant. Flying fish, catching shark and albatross, whale sightings, cockroaches, dirty cooks, a marriage on Christmas day are some of the occurrences on board on the months of journey.
In New Zealand, the anniversary of St. Andrew's Day was commemorated by a picnic held at Glenlyon, Mr William LYON's farm, Pito-one on the 30th Nov 1840. During the day a Scotch thistle seed was sown on the property, and in the evening a celebration was held at Barrett's Hotel, when Mr George HUNTER presided. (extract from Early Wellington;L E Ward). Being Scottish I am sure the McEWENs
and GALLOWAYs were in attendance.
In 1846 the military road between Wellington and Porirua began under instructions of Governor Grey.(over the Haywards). This shortened the journey to Porirua and Pauatahanui from Wellington considerably. This paved the way to new land subdivisions.
On 1 April 1847 a new agreement (over the New Zealand Company ill considered agreements) was signed at Porirua by ten Maori leaders. Boundaries were redefined, further payment made to the Maori owners and a substantial area set aside as 'Native Reserve'. The settlers could now move onto their
land.
I have a copy of 'Account of an Expedition from Pahatanui (sic) to the Upper Hutt address to the Engineer of Road' dated January 1857, by David McEWEN.
David McEwen is accompanied by David GALLOWAY and one of his sons. The report gives a description of the three day walking trek from Horokiwi stream to the Hutt.
N Z Spectator 30 Mar 1859;
'Crown Grants ready to issue - 1368 David GALLOWAY, 40 acres, Pauatahanui.'
Member of the Porirua Political Electoral Roll 1865 - 69. One of the three elected from six candidates as member of the newly formed Porirua electorate. (see Tawa Rd...). He was the member for Porirua district of the Wellington Provincial Council from 5/5/1865 to 1/5/1869. The Porirua District included
Pauatahanui. During that time he was on the on Ngahuranga Road Committee in 1868 to 1869.
He was on Electoral Rolls at that time, 1869-70, as standing for Belmont, Lower Hutt. Freehold land and house
Spent his last years a his daughter and son and laws George and Annie TAYLOR. Their granddaughter Elsie (nee TAYLOR) HARRIS nee TAYLOR remembers him putting on his Tam-o-shanter and saying - 'Aye, now I'm back in Bonnie Scotland'
Buried with his wife Ann in Pauatahanui cemetery. Gravestone inscription reads;
Although their chairs are empty now
and our loved ones are no more
What blessed comfort tis to know
We'll meet on the golden shore
Then bear with trials as they come
They may be for the best
Our parents happier are than we
For thay are now at rest
There is an obituary in the Evening Post - Wed Mar 13 1907 - reads as follows;
'Mr. David Galloway, whose death in his 89th year occurred on Monday last was one of Wellington's earliest settlers, having landed at Petone in 1840. He resided in the Hutt Valley for some twelve years and then went to the Pahautanui district, where he spent the rest of his life. For a period of ten years Mr.
Galloway, who went in for farming, represented the Porirua district in the Wellington Provincial Council with the late Mr. Brandon; he was a member of the Hutt Highway Board (which became the County Council), and acted for many years as a Maori interpreter. Mr. Galloway leaves nine children, seventy
grandchildren, and twenty great grandchildren. Of his five sons, four are farmers at Pahautanui, and another is a farmer in Woodville, and the daughters are Mrs. Samson (Sandon), Mrs. G. H. Taylor (Pahautanui), and Mrs. W. Taylor (Petone).'
N.B. Te town Sandon changed its name smewhere around 1910 to Sanson.

Drowned while crossing the Rangitikei River at Bulls. The body was never found. Another account gives the date as 15 January 1878. This account reads as follows;
'William and Agnes were returning home from church. There had been a flash flood and the river was running high. He told his wife to wait while he rode into test the ford. Her horse followed and stepped into a hole and stumbled. Her infant was thrown into the water. She tried to save him and they were both
swept away. The horse was found two miles down stream. This was at a place called Paramanui. (John Lobb had said there was an island here - but with the change of the river the island no longer exists).
